Mediation is a less expensive and more constructive alternative to litigation. In mediation, expenses are generally shared between the parties, which reduces each party’s costs. Please call for details regarding specific hourly or day rates and fees.
How much time will mediation take? If you are extremely well organized and agree on most issues, the total process can be as short as 1 or 2 hours. Most people, however, need 6 to 12 hours. Some parties have more complex situations. I will work with you for as long as you need to resolve your issues.
What is the average cost of mediation? As an example, the average cost of a divorce mediation including the preparation of an agreement is between $1,500 to $4,000 total, shared between the divorcing spouses.
How does that compare to litigation? According to an article in the February 2009 issue of Washingtonian Magazine, “Rates for divorce lawyers range from $275 an hour to $800 for the top guns. A well-handled divorce is likely to cost each party at least $10,000 and depending on the size and complexity of marital assets and on child-custody issues, it’s not unusual for the figure to reach $50,000 [each]. A trial…can cost each side well over $100,000.” Going to court also can take a great deal of time which often interferes with work and family obligations.
Family Mediation
Family mediation services are provided at an hourly rate with payment due at the end of each session. I charge a flat fee for the initial preparation of a mediated agreement. I do not charge for the agreement until you request me to prepare it.
Parenting Coordination
Parenting coordination services are provided at an hourly rate with payment due at the end of each session. In addition, an up-front retainer equal to 4 hours is charged and collected at the first session. Consultations with attorneys, therapists, teachers, and other professionals, and other communications outside the parenting coordination sessions, are billed against the retainer. You will receive a detailed accounting of the time spent on your behalf. Retainers may be renewed.
Civil Mediation
Civil (non-family) mediation services are billed at a half-day or full-day rate. Preparation of a mediated agreement and other consultations and communications outside the mediation sessions are billed at an hourly rate.
